The Royal Lochnagar 12 Years is the flagship of the distillery.
They were not really creative when they called the little stream near the Lochnagar Distillery in the east of Scotland "Distillery Burn". The small stream branches off a little further north from the river Dee to supply the water needed for the distillery.
Since 1826 the distillery has existed on the eastern edge of the Highlands between fields, meadows, woods and rocky ridges. Originally built on the other side of the river, the distillery only took up its present position after a dramatic fire. On a visit of Queen Victoria one was allowed to declare oneself as a "Royal Distillery".
In terms of production volume, Lochnagar is one of the smallest, and therefore also less well-known, distilleries in Scotland. Today the whiskies of Diageo are distributed within the Classic Malts series.
The Highland Single Malt shows woody to leathery tones, with a certain acidity, oil and toffee. On the palate the impression of wood and acidity persists, although sweet notes are also present.
Appearance: pale amber
Nose: planed wood, light toffee, boat varnish, after a while, coffee with brown sugar
Body: medium bodied, even reticent
Palate: pleasant; an initial sweetness is quickly overtaken by acidity
